There are some evenings when you simply want to dress up, raise a glass and enjoy being somewhere special – and for a romantic birthday celebration, The Ivy Castle View in Guildford certainly sets the scene.
Perched above Guildford High Street and overlooking the historic castle, The Ivy Castle View has that effortlessly glamorous feel that makes an ordinary evening feel like an occasion. From the moment we arrived, there was a lovely sense of anticipation, and Annalisa was ready to welcome her followers with a little glimpse of what was to come in her 30-second video.
And what better way to begin a birthday evening than with cocktails?
We sampled a selection from the cocktail menu, but there was one clear favourite – the Champagne Colada. Creamy, tropical and beautifully indulgent, it was the perfect celebratory start and definitely one to remember.
For dinner, we began with the Hoisin Duck Salad, a wonderfully fresh and flavour-packed dish with just the right balance of sweet and savoury. It was followed by the star of the evening for us: fillet of beef with honey peppercorn sauce. The beef was beautifully tender, while the rich, subtly sweet peppercorn sauce complemented it perfectly.
Then came dessert – and this was theatre as much as it was pudding.
Our Crème Brûlée was flambéed at the table, adding a little sparkle and drama to the end of the meal. There is something rather special about having dessert finished in front of you, especially when you’re celebrating.
And then came another lovely surprise.
The team brought us a sweet birthday surprise, which was such a thoughtful touch and exactly the kind of personal detail that turns dinner into a memorable experience. Recent diners celebrating their own anniversaries have similarly mentioned special surprises from the kitchen, alongside friendly and attentive service.
What we loved about our evening was that it wasn’t simply about the food. It was the combination of the setting, the cocktails, the atmosphere, the little touches and the feeling that this was somewhere designed for celebrating life’s special moments.
For a romantic birthday dinner in Guildford, The Ivy Castle View certainly delivered the kind of evening we were hoping for – glamorous without feeling stuffy, indulgent without being over the top, and with just enough theatre to make a birthday feel extra special.
Sometimes, it’s the little surprises that make the biggest memories – and this was certainly a birthday evening to remember.
