A Coastal Detour into Timeless Luxury by Annalisa Kerr
Surrey Magazine was delighted to dispel those winter blues with an indulgent step back in time wrapped in luxury, romance, heritage, and a touch of storybook magic. This festive escape to Bailiffscourt Hotel & Spa in West Sussex offered everything one could wish for: manicured lawns, a 13th century chapel, roaring log fires, hidden nooks, and a glamorous spa that sparkles like a discreetly modern jewel amid centuries of splendour.
This magnificent 39-bedroom, medieval style, coastal retreat with its award-winning spa owes its existence to the extraordinary vision of Walter Edward Guinness (1st Baron Moyne) and his wife Lady Evelyn Hilda Stuart Erskne Guinness – the same Guinness dynasty recently brought to life by Louis Partridge in Netflix’s the House of Guinness. Inspired by Lady Moyne’s love of the medieval, she and architect Amyas Phillips spent the 1920’s scoured Britain to find period treasures including entire buildings, stonework and woodlands which were transported to their family’s seaside estate in Climping.

Today, Bailiffscourt forms part of Historic Sussex Hotels privately owned collection of exceptional hotels alongside The Spread Eagle, Ockenden Manor, and The Black Horse – a family-owned group known for it’s exceptional character, charm, and hospitality.
Surrounded by nature and 30 acres of private parklands leading to the beach, this haven offers a true sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of modern life. For those craving tranquillity, space, and fresh sea air, this is your place!
