Join Annalisa Kerr as she reviews the exquisite Beaverbrook Townhouse, Chelsea.
Is this today’s version of Bridgerton? Perhaps. Surrey Magazine couldn’t resist finding out, swapping the tranquillity of the Surrey Hills for a spontaneous boutique hotel stay at Beaverbrook Town House – a private corner of Chelsea on Sloane Street, moments from Hyde Park and some of London’s most coveted boutiques, galleries, restaurants and theatres.
Having experienced the original Beaverbrook in the Surrey Hills, with its wonderful country–house spirit, we were intrigued to discover its city counterpart.
And what a contrast. Set within two beautifully restored Georgian townhouses, Beaverbrook Town House is intimate, theatrical and wonderfully residential. With just 14 individually designed suites, it feels less like checking into a hotel and more like being invited to stay at an extraordinarily stylish private home.
The interiors, by designer Nicola Harding, pay homage to London’s historic theatres, with each suite telling its own story through vintage photography, theatre posters, illustrations and bespoke details. Our Garrick–inspired studio suite was a deliciously dramatic retreat, with rich colours, sumptuous fabrics, velvet, soaring ceilings and a beautifully dressed four–poster bed.

The bathrooms are equally considered, while the overall effect manages that elusive balance between old–world glamour and contemporary comfort. This is somewhere you want to linger – over breakfast, while dressing for dinner, or after an evening exploring Chelsea, when closing the door behind you feels like entering another world.
And outside? Chelsea in full swing. Sloane Street, the King’s Road, designer boutiques, galleries and restaurants are all within easy reach, while Hyde Park is just a stroll away. The West End and its theatres are also temptingly close.
It feels wonderfully reminiscent of the great town–and–country tradition of another era: the London townhouse for the season, the country estate for summer. Horses and carriages may have been replaced by supercars and black cabs, but the idea remains gloriously intact.
Back at the Town House, Sir Frank’s Bar continues the theatrical theme with Gatsby–esque Art Deco glamour, Japanese–inspired tacos, light bites and an enticing cocktail menu. Meanwhile, The Fuji Grill serves modern Japanese fine dining throughout the restaurant — indoors and on the terrace — perfect for a long lunch or an evening that stretches on.

Perhaps what makes Beaverbrook Town House so seductive is its sense of privacy. There is no sprawling hotel atmosphere; instead, it feels discreet, personal and wonderfully grown–up.
Country one weekend, Chelsea the next. A magnificent Surrey estate one moment, your own stylish corner of London the next.
The modern–day town and country life? We rather like it.
ANNALISA’S VERDICT
Gentry living, reimagined for the 21st century – sophisticated, fun, vibrant and effortlessly glamorous. Beaverbrook Town House is escapism from the moment you arrive, proving that sometimes the greatest luxury is simply having somewhere beautiful to retreat to, right in the heart of it all.
